Second Training Course

This training occurred in Binxhou City, China from the 18th to the 22nd of September, 2017. The course provided an introduction to the principles of the genetic conservation of tree species. It demonstrated the use of a Forest Genetic Resources Training Guide, developed by Bioversity International, as a flexible tool for teaching and learning about forest genetic resource (FGR) issues in formal and informal education, or on-the-job training.

The course was aimed at university lecturers from South Asian, East Asian and Southeast Asian countries who:

  1. teach forestry but are not specialized in genetics
  2. are specialised in genetics but are not teaching forestry
  3. teach tree breeding but are interested in teaching broader genetic issues.

After the course, it was expected that participants would incorporate some of the content of the training into their teaching, and also share with colleagues at their home institutions or beyond.

First Training Course

This training course, held in October 2016, provided an introduction to the principles of genetic conservation of tree species. It demonstrated the use of a Forest Genetic Resources Training Guide, developed by Bioversity International, as a flexible tool for teaching and learning about FGR issues in formal and informal education, or on-the-job training. Targeting non-specialists, this training session used real case studies to focus on the links between sustainable forest management and FGR, covering areas such as conservation strategies, trees outside forests, seed supply chains, forest management, forest restoration and logging. The Guide demonstrated the value of FGR for responsible decision-making in forest and natural resource management. It had a global geographic scope and covered issues of practical relevance to the local conservation and sustainable use of FGR. The course covered two training modules of the Forest Genetic Resources Training Course:

  1. Species conservation strategies (Module 1)
  2. Seed supply Chain (Module 3)
